Essential care tips for your jewelry, handbags and other accessories

Fashion Jewelry
To extend your jewelry life-span and to preserve its gloss and glamour, it is important to avoid direct moisture, hairspray, perfume, creams and the like directly onto the jewelry. Spray perfume, hairspray and apply your moisturizer first and wait until the skin is dry before putting on your jewelry! Many of our products, including Jewelry is adorned with crystals that are glued onto the metal. To avoid that glued crystals loose and are lost avoid dropping jewelry on hard surfaces because excessive force and other unusual strains are common causes to loosen or break crystals. To glue the stones/crystals, use a clear glue. There are many good adhesives suitable for jewelry and metal, please ask at the store which glue you should use.

We recommend that before you use your jewelry to check all the crystal stones and if possible, add a thin layer of clear nail polish over the crystals, it is a way to help avoid dropping crystals with time. Repeat the procedure a couple of times a year. All jewelry, regardless of the material, must be handled with care. Always store jewelry in a jewelry box, for example, or in a jewelry pouch. Moisture affects the surface and we recommend you to avoid having those lying in the bathroom, and take them off when you wash your hands, shower or bathe. In contact with water, the material can lose its silver / gold color tone and become brownish.

Cleaning of silver, silver plated and silver-and gold-toned metals
All the silver is oxidized with time. The area affected by the sulphur contained in the air, the skin, and also from fabrics etc.. Light oxidation can be cleaned with a dry towel, linen cloth or other soft cloth. For more severe oxidation of sterling silver jewelry, we recommend silver polish. Silver items that has real pearls avoid that the agent comes in contact with them. Sterling silver jewelry without genuine pearls can be cleaned with Silver Dip which can be purchased in jewelry stores. It is important to be careful with silver jewelry and jewelry in silver-and gold tone metal, these should only be cleaned gently with soft cloth so that silver layer or silver-gold tone color does not wear off.

Note that sulphur causes discoloration of the jewelry and some people excrete more sulphur on the skin than others and in some cases this may be because the person is taking medication.

How to care your pearls
Wipe your pearls occasionally after use with a soft, damp cloth or handkerchief, etc.., especially if you use spray, perfume, skin cream or strong medications. Do not store your pearls together with keys, coins, or other hard materials in a handbag! Store pearls in a jewelry box or in other soft material, but not in cotton! Cotton dries out the moisture found in the pearl.

Watches

How to care your watches
Use the same handling procedure as for jewelry - above. The clock mechanism may be adversely affected if you drop it on the floor or other hard surface, the clock can then stop working, or not working properly. If the watch is waterproof it will be mentioned in the text of the description. For other watches avoid water to prevent damage to the watch. We check all the watches and functioning before we send them to our customers. All our watches are battery inactive and we activate it only before we wrap the clock and sends it to the client. This means that the battery in your watch should work for a long time when the customer gets it, but we do not know for how long. For this reason, we offer a spare battery when you purchase a watch from us. To avoid having problems with the clock's functioning, do not replace the battery pack by yourself if the clock would stop. Ask a watchmaker to make the battery change.

Handbags

Care instructions for handbags made of genuine leather
Leather stays clean and beautiful longer with regular cleaning with a damp cloth. We therefore recommend removing any stains immediately. Where necessary to re-grease skin leather handbags, we recommend always using a colorless leather care product without too much fat. Grease the bag, let the fat dry in and then wipe thoroughly. Preferably allow the bag to air dry an additional day before using it to avoid that color and fat in the cream rub smears on the clothes you wear. Finish with a thin layer of waterproofing spray.

Avoid exposure of your leather bag for a long period of strong sunlight or extreme cold and in contact with the snow, the leather can dry out and eventually loses it's elasticity and patina. Large
temperature differences affect the material's properties negatively. Avoid dropping drinks or liquid directly on your bag because the leather can absorb liquid and stain.

Care instructions for handbags in genuine suede
If it is raining outside, avoid using bags in genuine suede. Suede can easily rub off  if it gets wet. For best use, impregnate your suede bag with a protective agent and take it easy when using your suede bag in bad weather. Suede bags should always be impregnated with a protective agent! If you get a stain on your suede bag, try to remove it with a damp cloth. Let it dry and then brush it with a suede brush, one of the special suede brushes available in the market. The alternative to suede brushes are special suede-grit sandpaper, which also is used to roughen the surface of unwanted stain.

Care instructions for handbags and other accessories in artificial leather
Artificial leather is a synthetic material that is similar to leather. All products in synthetic leather is easy to care for. With a damp cloth, you can easily clean the surface of the products. It is important to avoid the use of alcohol, hairspray or any other products containing solvents so that the surface of the material and color will not be affected and destroyed. Use the same rules that apply for jewelry, please see the text above.

Bags of synthetic leather can not handle as much load as bags in genuine leather, therefore avoid carrying heavy things in the bag. Sun and even cold can adversely affect material properties. The material can lose its elasticity and small cracks on the most exposed places on the material can occur.

Bags and other products in synthetic leather is not as durable as products of genuine leather and has a considerable shorter life-span than genuine leather, longevity of man-made leather products under normal use is approximately one season. In heavy use, ie. product is used every day, lifetime will shorten. The product can then show early signs of wear, such as small cracks in exposed parts of the product, color changes, etc. It is important to remember that the products in synthetic leather requires extra precaution if you want the products to look good for a longer time than a season. Avoid to use bags made of synthetic leather in extreme cold when the temperature changes it can cause premature cracking including in the handles and shoulder straps.

The thinner / softer synthetic or genuine leather, the less wear and tear it can handle. The thin leather is more fragile and sensitive, and therefore there may be reason to encourage our
clients with children / pets or who need bags to carry books and other heavy objects to choose a durable leather quality, preferably choose bags in genuine leather because artificial leather is
generally not suitable as a school bag to carry books and / or many heavy things that can be stressing to the bag seams. Too many, and / or heavy items in the bag can risk that strap breaks at its fragile parts and we can not be responsible for damage caused by the user. If this happens, please contact a shoemaker to repair the damage. BagsandFashion.com do not repair bags.

Upon purchasing a low cost bag, the user should be even more cautious because these bags do not usually have the same quality as the more expensive bags have. The metal may not be as strong and the surface is sometimes not perfect, the leather tends to be thinner and of lower quality. The cheaper the bag, the less durable it is. These bags are classified as "disposable" bags and if you have a need for more durable bags, avoid buying low-priced bags.

Makeup, perfume and products with fluids is usually the reason why you get spots in/on bags of genuine leather and also synthetic leather. To avoid getting spots in/on your bags, store makeup, creams, pens, shampoo or other products containing liquid in a small makeup bag, pouch, pencil box, etc. Do not attempt to get rid of stains by yourself, then the bag may become blotchy and even more spotty, but feel free to go to a shoemaker or a leather shop to get advice from someone who is expert. Do the same if any part of the bag is broken, a shoemaker can always try to sew the straps and other parts of a case, whether your bag is made of synthetic leather or genuine leather.

Bring along the product that has stains so that an expert can look at it because the structure of the leather is very variable and may require different treatment approaches. There are a lot of products on the market that offers some protection against spills and stains, and also improves the durability of the products of genuine leather. It is important not to keep bags and other accessories of synthetic leather or real leather in moist environments because they can cause damage and odors. If a product is made of real leather and comes in contact with water, wipe off immediately with a dry towel and then let it dry freely.

For best storage, keep your bag dark in normal room temperature. If you do not use the bag every day please fill the bag with tissue paper so that it retains its shape otherwise you risk the formation of folds where the bag rests and it can even crack. Protect your handbag with our dustbag so it does not get dust and dirt on them.

To avoid ruining your bag, your jewelry, your watches or other accessories, please do not use force to open or close zippers, buttons, hooks or other functional parts of the product. If you notice that something suddenly is not working as it usually does, take it slow and careful and analyse the problem before you do anything that may damage the product and make it unusable.

If the zipper on your bag or other accessories are tough, a good and easy way to fix the problem is using a candle. Take a candle and easy and gently drag it over the zipper a few times to make a bit of candle wax stuck on zipper tags - be careful with staining the fabric. Drag the slider slowly back and forth and you will notice that the runner slides easier.

Clothes

Care instructions for clothes
Many of our clothes contain washing instructions that you should follow. For garments without washing instructions, hand wash is recommended for safety's sake. Garments with stone details, metal parts or embroidery should always be washed by hand.

Our most common types of fabric
Polyester and many other synthetic fabrics are made of synthesized polymers. The material is very durable, quick-drying and resistant to mold and mildew, easy to wash and holds shapes well. Polyester and most synthetic fabrics is flammable and you should be careful around fire. Pure synthetics or synthetic blends usually do not shrink at all and is doing considerably better than organic fabrics.

Viscose is an organic material and the fibres are based on cotton or cellulose. Viscose exist in blends with cotton, wool, linen or other synthetic fibres. Like most organic fabric, viscose fabric shrink. How much a viscose fabric shrinks depends for example on how tightly it is woven, but it depends of course also on the quality. There are other fabrics woven with viscose and even washing temperature is often a major impact on how much a fabric shrinks. Viscose has a silky appearance and feel, and has also the ability to breathe in a manner similar to cotton.

Spandex or Lycra, a synthetic fabric with a polymer base, such as nylon or polyester. Spandex can expand up to 600% and springs back without losing its shape, but over time, the fibres begin to lose their elastic properties.

Cotton is an organic material and is strong and durable as fabric, but not very warm. To wash it often is, however, not a disadvantage, because the material, contrary to most other fabrics, become stronger by being washed, but unfortunately, it often shrinks the first wash, as it tries to tighten again.
